Community Spotlight: Grand Canyon Food Pantry
After a deadly flash flood roared across the bottom of the Grand Canyon last month killing three people, severe water and stay restrictions were put in place across the national park.
Heather Lapre is the manager of the Grand Canyon Food Pantry. We spoke to her just days after park officials estimated they had only a few days’ reserves of water for people on the South Rim. We caught up with her during the Flagstaff Family Food Center’s Anti-Hunger Summit.
“Our community is on extreme alert to conserve,” she said.
She expects residents will turn to the Pantry much more as the park undergoes repairs.
“I’ve been through several different crises as manager of the pantry and I can tell you that we’re probably going to need extended hours, more storage space and more volunteers to make the operation continue,” she said.
